What is Large Language Model Optimisation?

Large language model optimisation (LLMO) is the practice of making your content more likely to be retrieved, referenced, and cited by large language models like GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini when they generate answers to user queries.

Why It Matters

Large language models power every major AI search product — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot. When someone asks these tools a question about your industry, the LLM decides which sources to cite.

LLMO is the technical side of that equation. While GEO is the broader discipline, LLMO focuses specifically on how LLMs retrieve and rank content during their generation process. If you understand how the model selects sources, you can structure your content to be selected more often.

How It Works

LLMs retrieve content through a process called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). In simple terms:

  1. The model receives a query — "What's the best SEO automation tool for agencies?"
  2. It searches its training data and/or live web sources — depending on the platform
  3. It selects the most relevant, authoritative sources — based on content structure, factual density, and source authority
  4. It generates an answer and cites its sources — your content either makes the cut or it doesn't

LLMO improves your chances by focusing on what LLMs value: clear factual claims, well-structured content with proper headings, specific data points they can reference, and schema markup that explicitly identifies what your content is about and who authored it.

Common Mistakes

Thinking LLMO means keyword-stuffing for AI. It doesn't. LLMs are far more sophisticated than keyword matching. They evaluate content quality, factual density, and authority — not keyword frequency.

The other mistake is treating all LLMs the same. GPT-4 (ChatGPT), Claude, and Gemini each have different retrieval mechanisms and training data. A good LLMO strategy makes content universally well-structured rather than optimised for one specific model.

How I Use This

My AI search optimisation service applies LLMO principles across your content — structured definitions, citation-ready formatting, and schema that LLMs can parse. The AI visibility assessment measures whether it's working across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.
